There are many species of the black snake. Some of the best known are Pantherophis obsoletus, commonly known as the western rat snake, black rat snake, pilot black snake, or simply black snake, is a nonvenomous colubrid species found in North America. No subspecies are currently recognized. The genus Pseudechis contains the group of elapids commonly referred to as the Black Snakes. These snakes are found in every Australian state with the exception of Tasmania and some species are found in Papua New Guinea. Another one Coluber constrictor is a species of nonvenomous, colubrid snakes, endemic to North America and Central America, commonly referred to as the eastern racers.
